London to Leicester

I was very tired off the plane as I hadn’t slept. Plus next to a teenage boy who took off his shoes (slightly stinky) and another one who seemed not to feel well, and did that thing where he wouldn’t get out of the seat to let you get past, but instead expected you to squeeze past. Personally, I think it’s better to just get up. More room, less bum in your face, and a good chance to stretch your legs.

Luckily it was very easy to get to M&L’s place and I was even met at the tube station! They were awesome hosts and I spent the day napping until the evening. M cooked a lovely meal and I was impressed by the cheapness of Boursin, which is a spreadable cheese-ish thing that is much more expensive in NZ. Also the strawberries are better here, much juicer and sweeter.

I met up with Little Sis that evening and we had a good gossipy catch up. Great to hear about her work and see a family member again. Then we had Turkish tea and baklava with M&L. It was a fantastic evening and a great welcome to London.

The next day I took a train to Leicester. I was picked up by Maid of Honour L and off we went to Bride2 and Groom2’s house. Mackerel was there and we got to packing picnic baskets for the fete style wedding in a few days. It was wonderful to see more familiar faces and catch up.

MOH L was staying at her parents’ house. It is very cool as it is on a Canal and has a cherry tree and strawberry bushes that I raided this morning. She normally stays in Singapore (jealous!) but visits back home sometimes. Her parents were currently on vacation in their canal boat! Which meant she had room for 2 couples to stay for the wedding too. On the day of the wedding it was a house full of very cool lovely people. Found out couples were organising a Harry Potter convention, but we would be out of town for it.

The days run together, but I think the next day Mackerel and I went around Leicester shopping and visited the New Walk, the Museum, and Jewry Wall.

New Walk is a long old street that has been maintained for strictly for pedestrian purposes only for 200 years.

The museum was small but had an interesting ancient Egyptian section with 4 mummies, although one was on loan. It was weird to think about human bodies being put on display and loaned out. There was also a lovely, eclectic art display section and we saw an exhibit of Picasso’s pottery.

Jewry Wall is a site that had been occupied at different times and built upon since before medieval times. There is a church next to it which was built from the brick remains of the Roman Bathhouse that you could still see.

Later in the day Svendlemouse and Star arrived and it was good to catch up. Then all the girls headed off to Lush for an excellent hen’s night. We got info on all their products and had either a facial or a food scrub done. Then we spent out 10 pound voucher and a lot of people spent a bit more to get the excellent goody bag. I bought these teeth tablets which you use instead of tooth paste (kinda like chewing a weirdly flavored sherbet then brushing your teeth with it) and a body wash that smells like cut grass. Then we had excellent Chinese buffet for dinner. A great night.

Goodbye New York

The High Line park is an excellent walk, although it was packed with people. One of the phone companies had sponsored a rainbow play park, and further down the line we saw a whole bunch of people, mostly men, some in bondage gear, at a large gathering. It may have had to do with Pride week coming up or possibly to promote the marriage bill that was coming up at the time.

I really like how the walk has been done with lots of plants and flowers added, plus a cafe halfway through. We walked the whole length of the walk and since Bride1 was wearing her pedometer I think we figured out we were walking 2-3 times the recommended daily steps each day she was here. So yeah, I had sore feet.

For dinner we headed to the Upper West side where we ate at Fatty Crab. A cool Malaysian/South East Asian restaurant, which wasn’t what we were expecting, but still very good. Then I may have got us a bit lost, and we had salty caramel yogurt for desert and eventually walked the 30 blocks back to the hotel.

The next day we have a lovely brunch and walked a bit longer in Central Park. The shuttle I booked arrived 12mins early, and wouldn’t wait for me to get back, then the company stuffed us around and the next shuttle never arrived, so Bride1 rushed with me to Penn Station via the subway and made sure I got on the train to the airport. I was very sad to leave her and New York. But I was off to London to see the Queen! Well, to see Little Sister and attend a wedding, but that is still important!

Mermaids, Salsa and Central Park

After the flea market (where I bought some brooches), Bride1 and I headed off to Coney Island to see the annual Mermaid Parade. A lot (hundreds) of people dress up in crazy mermaid costumes and form the parade, I think there is judging for a winner. They also had some old cars in the parade too.

Because of the crush of people we didn’t really get a chance to walk around much and we were running out of time. So I guess I’ll have to go back another time.

Then we went back to visit Dad’s friends in Brooklyn who live in a very cool 3 story attached house. We had a lovely dinner with them and their daughter L had just bought an ipad2 with the blue cover so it was fun to compare our toys. We could also hear a bag piper in the distance with was random, but fun.

Then they took us down to a Celebrate Brooklyn concert in Prospect Park, which I mentioned in the last post. There was an awesome Latin music band playing and a lot of people dancing Salsa. Pretty good value for a $3 donation. When it started getting dark we headed back. It was lovely to have met more of Dad’s friends and I will try to look them up again if I am ever back in this part of the world.

Today, Bride1 and I checked out some of Central Park. Considering my hotel is right next door it’s a bit weird that I didn’t do this earlier, but I feel that I have managed to get a lot of other stuff done instead. We visited the awesome Alice in Wonderland statue and walked around a bit, down through the zoo area.

Then we headed down Fifth Avenue and looked at the shops as we went past. Then as we passed by we thought we would check out the H&M sale and one of my dreams came true! Robyn, one of my favorite singers, was performing. I think I shrieked in happiness and rushed to get close to take some pictures and video. So yeah, I totally <3 New York right now. Unfortunately I missed out on the deal where if you spent $50 at a certain time you got a free Robyn CD and could stand in line for her to autograph it. But we had more things to do and Bride1, while liking the music, wasn't (yet) a fan, so I figured we shouldn't hang around. Plus the queue was long by then. Next we visited Rockefeller Plaza and had a quick look at the lego store there. We had pizza for lunch and wandered down fifth until now, when I'm at the public library using the Wifi again, and Bride1 is checking out the 100 years exhibit. This really is a beautiful building. Next we are doing to visit High Line which is a park that has been built over an old train line, and I'm sure we will find something to do this evening. I'm going to miss the US. I've had a good time here, met some very cool people and I am really going to miss Bride1. I hope it isn't another 4 years until I see her again. Tomorrow I leave for the UK and another wedding. Update, photos added. 20110630-104247.jpg

More Broadway, Lower Manhatton and Back to Brooklyn

As I type this I am sitting at the Brooklyn Flea Market, drinking a tamarind juice and resting my feet as Bride1 wanders about. Once again I am glad I am on a budget, as there are lots of beautiful things here.

The Lion King was fantastic, like a massive puppet show and musical combined. The matinee showing was filled with little kids and there was lots of clapping along to songs. At the start I had crazy hilarious flashbacks to my old Jazz Ballet classes where once I performed as a bird in Circle of Life. The costumes here were a tad better though. Especially awesome was the life size elephant!

After the show I visited the World Trade Centre construction and a preview if the memorial centre which will open in September for the 10 year anniversary. Then off to Wall Street, China Town and I also stumbled into Little Italy. In China Town I visited a temple with a large golden Buddha, but couldn’t hang out in the main area because of a memorial service. Instead I just did a bit of meditation, which I was really in need of, and gave some donations and bought a little Buddha necklace.

Yesterday Bride1 arrived and I went to pick her up in Harlem as she got off the bus, then it was back to the hotel and off to revisit Time Square. Actually she had not been before, even though she had been to New York. So we wandered into lots of shops again and also went to see Bridesmaids. There was more gross/hilarious moments.. And a character even spoke Thai at one point. What is up with movies flaring my thai-home sickness.

We also managed to walk to the public library and visit Grand Central station and the Chrysler building.

Today we continue to cram in things to do and we walked the Brooklyn Bridge before walking to this flea market. There is never too little to do here. I have already started thinking of things as “I’ll have to do that on my next visit!”

Update: posting this blog entry from a $3 concert in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Photo below.

Broooadway, Empire State Building and MMarketing

Hmmm, let me recall what I have done in the last few days..

I have seen Pirates of the Caribbean on IMAX in 3D and Hangover 2 (on normal in normal). Pirates was excellent fun, and H2 was equal parts offensive and hilarious. I must find out if Thai people have been offended or not. It may also be heavily censored there. Like when my mum watched KickAss on the plane and told me she really liked it. And I was surprised cos in the cinema version it has the C word, then I had to explain what the C word meant to my mum. Good times.

Hangover 2 also made me homesick for Thailand, good thing I’m going there in August. Watching it you wouldn’t think it would make you feel that way, but they had me at “fanta in a bag”. Orange sodas just taste better in a bag with ice and a straw.

I also went to see the Empire State Building. For a while I’ve been feeling like there is something wrong with me at the moment. I’m in NYC and I’m just thinking “ho hum, another tall building, nicely decorated and a nice view”. But I feel this is because my normal holiday habit of shopping til I drop has been taken from me. This is what living out of a suitcase does. Also, it would be a better time with a friend I think. One good thing is that when I travel by myself I’m pretty patient about queuing and I’m not rushing anywhere.

I’ve also read The Snow Queen by Mercedes Lackey. It was easy to read and enjoyable.

I went and lined up for tickets to see a broadway show (go patient queuing!) and got 20% off How to succeed in business starring Daniel Radcliffe. It wasn’t much of a discount compared with other shows, but I decided it was the one I was least likely to see again. The show was awesome by the way! Entertaining the whole way through and excellent fun dance numbers. I just got back and took my first taxi ride in New York back to the hotel. I got chatting to the Pakistani taxi driver who has 6 sons back home and all of them are in arranged marriages still going strong.

In my free time before the show I bought tickets to go see the Lion King on broadway tomorrow matinee. No discount, but I figured since I wasn’t buying anything I could splash out a little. Then it started to rain so I popped into a few of the big stores around Time Square. M&m world, toys r us, and Sephora.

Update: photos from empire state building, m&m world and toys r us.

I bought some m&m earrings (fake delicious and travel sized!) and some crazy colored m&ms, including almond and pretzel flavours. I was tempted to ride the ferris wheel in the toys r us, but it’s one of those “better with a friend” things. Although I did get a stranger to take a picture of me posing with the Calico Critters (sylvanian families) display. In Sephora I painted my nails all different colours to match my new shoes. I really like Sephora, it’s a make up shop, and they have cool travel size stuff right by the counters to lure you in. But I resisted dang it!

Puerto Rico Parade day

Today I went for a wander to the NY public library. I had seen on TV that there was a parade today for Puerto Rico on 5th avenue right near the library.

So I went to go have a look at the parade. It was a bit crowded so I didn’t stay too long after grabbing a few pictures.

Spent a bit of time at the library. The wifi there could actually handle me adding some pictures and updating this blog. It is a very cool building, and it is celebrating 100 years. That seems to be my trend for this trip, to visit places celebrating anniversaries. So I got to see a cool exhibit with various books and early drafts of things, like the declaration of independence, maps and plays and stuff. Also some modern art, advertising and a kkk cloak. It was an eclectic mix.

Next I walked over to Times Square and that was cool to wander for a bit. I wasn’t in the mood for properly checking anything out, so will probably head there again. They had set up some seats because they were showing the Tony awards live later in the evening. There was also a mini red carpet with a Tony’s background so tourists could take photos, so I did 🙂

Toms and Brooklyn Gardens

In my final days in Indianapolis I went shopping with Bride1 and got some new shoes. They are Toms brand, multi-coloured and say “the journey is the destination” on them. They also donate a pair of shoes to a child in need with every pair that is sold. How could I resist?! Well the way they fold a the front kinda looks like foot binding, but I’m just gonna override that thought and pretend it’s more like origami. Did I mention they are super comfy and that they came with a bag, a sticker and a friendship bracelet?

I know they are super comfy because I did a lot of walking today. I wanted to go to the “home grown” festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. So off I went, getting confused on the subway, but still getting to Prospect Park eventually. When I arrived I checked out a Pride festival that was going on in Brooklyn, I think Pride week starts in a few weeks, but they are starting to kick off things now.

Then I took a nice walk through Prospect Park to the Botanical Gardens. Well, it was pretty nice considering it was raining lightly the whole time I was out and about today. I feel like I’m being told that tonight is a good night to stay in and read a book.

The botanical gardens was pretty and looked like a great place to go when the weather is good, but by that stage I just wanted to get dry, so I didn’t stick around for the festivities. There was even going to be a demonstration about making Jams, which made me think of friends back in NZ, but I was ready to head back to the hotel then.

Belize

So, I better get this post for Belize out of the way or it will overwhelm me and I will never do it.

In summary I’m really glad I went and it was an excellent holiday. However, it was super exhausting because I couldn’t get a good nights sleep for most of the week which lead me to feel very emotional and I really missed my family and friends a lot. Luckily I got to spend quality time with Bride1, even though I was also trying to give the happy couple some space.

What I liked best about Belize was that it reminded me of Thailand, the weather was so warm, but I felt it wasn’t as scenic. The food there was excellent, everyplace we went was delicious and had great service.

Now, no one goes to Belize city, we bypassed the place and had rented a car and drove to Placencia Village. I didn’t do any of the driving, but the roads were similar to NZ, more windy and thin than the guys were used to. Lots and lots of speed bumps. There are only 4 highways in Belize.

Our hotel was very relaxing, although not very private because you could hear the restaurant right outside the room and anyone walking past the cabana. It was aimed towards couples, so this meant it had an excellent pool (ie not a kiddies pool, but one that was deep enough to do flips and handstands). Because it was off season we had the place to ourselves often too.

We alternated having cocktails (rum based was cheapest!) and relaxing at the hotel swimming and reading (Maeve Binchey) with some excursions.

First was to Monkey River where we hoped to see jaguars and crocodiles, but actually saw howler monkeys, tree crabs, lizards, birds and large spiders. Luckily we didn’t see wild pigs either. Unluckily, the mosquitos had a field day. We also saw Manatees and bottle nose dolphins, but only fins, noses and tails because the water was very murky. They were too quick for me to get any photos.

Next excursion was snorkeling. I was disappointed because our hotel has lots of sea grass, so you couldn’t really go comfortably snorkeling there. But the excursion was very cool we travelled out to an island reserve and saw lots of fish. Also a barracuda and stingray. It was a bit choppy in the water, so not that comfy, but still quite relaxing. I was proud of myself for putting on enough sunscreen so that I didn’t get burnt the whole trip! Unlike some of my fellow travelers. Meeting other people who stayed at our hotel and nearby hotels was pretty cool. Seems like Belize attracts interesting people in it’s off season.

Our last excursion was driving out to some Maya ruins near the border with Guatamala. It was fascinating learning about the ruins and fun to climb up over them. But it was soooo hot that day, and when I climbed to the top I started feeling a bit nauseous. I’m not the best with heights and it was the middle of the day. Not a great combo.

We hired a guide when we got there and they had to hand crank the car over a bridge to get to the ruins. I think it was a 3 hr drive each way from the hotel too. I also saw some giant iguanas near the ruins. Pretty cool I think. Some people eat them and call it Bamboo Chicken.

Bride1, Groom1 and J also tried this rodent that Belizians once served to queen Elizabeth. It looked tough to chew. I wasn’t that hungry 😛 Maybe I should have been more adventurous, but I’ve had chicken feet and frog before, so I didn’t feel a need to prove anything.

One night at the hotel me and J saw the local manatee eating some sea grass, and another time me and Bride1 are pretty sure we saw a stingray swimming away.

Indy 500

Ok, so I guess I better start updating this blog again. Since I have a bit of time to kill now I’m back in Indianapolis I’ll separate it out into separate posts.

So first, the Indy 500 was great. We went shopping on friday for all the supplies. Since J had been before he told us we had to leave crazy early to avoid traffic, he also organized us to park at his friend R’s house. Turns out R’s house was a really sweet location, so actually we didn’t need to leave early and we actually got away pretty fast after the event.

The actual event was cool. Stinking hot day and sitting in the sun meant that I had to be very cautious about sunscreen. Bride1 and I were cheering for Scott Dixon, the kiwi, who had actually won in 2008 I think. J also had Scott Dixon to win in his office betting pool. So it was a lot of fun keeping tabs on how he was doing in the race. He was most often in the top 4 and actually leading for the first 25 laps I think.

Unfortunately on the last lap he was in the top 3, but a car crashed right in front of him and he ended up 6th! Stink!

There was a pretty good party atmosphere going on, but due to the large size of the event and the heat we didn’t wander around too much.

I still find it hard to get used to the American patriotism. Like standing for 2 songs that aren’t even the national anthem (america the beautiful was one of them I think) and standing and waving for troops getting a ride around the track. Not something I am used to.

Update: photos!

Goodbye Chicago: the return to Indy

In my final days at Chicago I went to visit Navy Pier. Well, first I got lost wondering around Chicago trying to figure out my way to Navy Pier. Which was pretty fun.

I was wary of the place because I heard it was so touristy, I think a lot of people from Chicago don’t even go there. Unless they wanted to go to the IMAX theatre. But while it was touristy it was pleasant enough and I think a lot of boat tours start from there. I think after memorial weekend (the one coming up) a lot of stuff gets a bit more fun, like free shuttles etc. Any way it was nice, but going by myself I wasn’t inspired to do much there, like ride the ferris wheel etc

We also visited the botanical gardens which was really pretty and I took lots of photos of the model railway system. The weather has been a bit crazy lately with thunderstorms, then being warm, but it’s all interesting.

I took the megabus back to Indianapolis which was fine. There was some crazy hail last night, the size of golf balls, and some tornado warnings too!

Right now I’m typing this up while at Bride1’s gym where she teaches gymnastics. I participated in the preschool class, and even got a ladybug stamp on my hand! The kids are really cute.

Update: photos!
